About Us

Welcome

Weller is a K-5 school offering traditional grade instruction. Weller opened in 1983. We are located about six miles northeast of downtown Fairbanks on a hill surrounded by beautiful birch and spruce trees.

Weller is a family and community-oriented school, and we are very proud of our talented and dedicated staff, our supportive and caring parents, and our hardworking and eager students.

The mission of Weller Elementary, a family and community oriented school, is to develop in students a strong educational foundation and a desire to learn, by promoting challenging, diverse learning opportunities, family partnerships, a safe environment, and a respect for every student's uniqueness.

HIstory                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Weller Elementary started with 596 students for the first year in 1983. In 1988, the enrollment was the largest ever with 757 students. One hundred twenty students had to go to Joy school due to overcrowding.  Weller celebrated its 40th anniversary during the 2023-2024 School year.

Namesake                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Weller Elementary  was named for Rosamond Agnes Weller, a Fairbanks educator for thirty seven years. Her nomination as namesake for a new school in 1993 was made with broad public support. Naming the school after Miss Weller was the first time in Fairbanks that a school was named for a woman and for a person who was still alive.

Mascot and School Colors                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Weller's mascot is the whale: a creature powerful and gentle. It was chosen by the school's first principal Mr. Shellinger and his wife, Carol Merritt, on boarding a plane, returning from Hawaii. To compliment the mascot the colors blue and white were selected.
